How to Design a Daily Routine Chart for Toddlers

Toddlers thrive on predictability. When they know what is coming next, they feel safe, secure, and are much less likely to throw a tantrum during transitions. However, since toddlers can't read yet, a traditional written schedule won't work.

The solution? A visual daily routine chart! Here is how you can easily generate one tailored to your family's unique schedule.

The Magic of Visual Schedules

Visual charts use simple pictures to represent activities (e.g., a toothbrush for brushing teeth, a bed for nap time). This gives toddlers a sense of control because they can "read" the chart themselves and anticipate the next activity.

Step 1: List Your Daily Anchors

Before creating the chart, jot down the non-negotiable "anchors" of your day. Keep it simple. A standard toddler routine might look like this:

  1. Wake up & Potty
  2. Breakfast
  3. Get Dressed
  4. Playtime
  5. Lunch
  6. Nap
  7. Snack
  8. Outside Time
  9. Dinner
  10. Bath & Bed

Step 2: Generate the Chart in the Studio

Head to the SketchKiddo Studio and select the Routine Chart generator.

Step 3: Build Your Schedule

Select the activities from the predefined set that match the list you created in Step 1. The generator is smart enough to match appropriate, kid-friendly icons to each activity automatically. You can choose to generate a "Morning Routine," an "Evening Routine," or a full "Daily Routine."

Step 4: Pick a Theme

Does your toddler love space? Dinosaurs? Under the sea? Add a theme to the chart to make it visually exciting for them. A customized border and theme-appropriate colors will be applied to the chart.

Step 5: Print and Display!

Print the chart and hang it at your toddler's eye level—the fridge or their bedroom door are great spots.

Pro Tip: Laminate the chart and use a dry-erase marker (or Velcro stickers) so your toddler can check off each activity as they complete it. This adds an interactive element that builds incredible independence!
